For the past 10 years, The Dawson Theatre Collective has produced the compelling and original plays: HomoSimian (2016) This Is Not a Drill (2015), Looking For Virgil Swift (2014), Hamlette: The Melancholy Dame (2013), Lysistrata (2012), Not Julius Caesar (2011), A Midsummer Night’s Kick-Ass Dream (2010), Rhinoceros (2009), and Uphill Both Ways (2008).

In our exciting student-written play Oedipus Rox, this year’s 35-member cast offers up a hilarious and heartbreaking take on a timeless masterpiece. Sophocles’ 2,500 year old murder mystery tells the tragic story of a man cursed by a dreadful fate that he has done nothing to deserve. Or has he? Set in Thebes, the “wild west” of ancient Greece, Oedipus solves the riddle of the bewitching Sphinx and is rewarded with the crown and the widow of the former king. But the terrible prophecy he flees continues to haunt him. As he tries to save his city from plague, he runs headlong into his own destiny. Will his search for the truth save his city or lead to its ultimate destruction? Oedipus Rox is a love story about free will versus fate and blindness versus sight. Can we ever truly see the path we are meant to take? Can we choose to go a different way? At what cost?

Whether you love the original play or if it haunts you like a curse from high school English class, we guarantee you’ll enjoy the DTC’s reimagining, replete with feuding Greek gods, gender-shifting prophets, and even an appearance by Sigmund Freud himself. Featuring student-composed original music and lyrics, Oedipus Rox promises to be our most inventive and unforgettable production to date.
